The first bell rings whenever I hear or read it, is it a figurative speech or a poetic device… Does Rhyme Scheme include in this?????
Oh God!! Shakespeare confused us the most…
A literary device is a tool used by writers to hint at larger themes, ideas, and meaning in a story or piece of writing. There are many styles of literary devices, each serving a different purpose. Some operate at the sentence level, while others serve the piece of writing as a whole.
To cut short the confusion, it is a form of expression used by the poet/author to make the reader understand the essence of writing – its style, theme, imagination, creativity and the vocabulary.
Now let’s talk about Rhyme Scheme- in Grade XI and XII – many poems are written in free verse. Free Verse refers to the literary device where in its free from limitations of the regular meter or rhythm, does not rhyme with fixed forms.
Example – My Mother at Sixty Six
Driving from my parent’s home
To Cochin last Friday morning,
I saw my mother beside me.
Check the last words of each line
line 1- home
line 2 – morning
line 3 – me
Now the above words are not related to each other in the way of ‘Rhyme’. So it is a ‘free verse’.
Rhyme Scheme changes line by line, stanza by stanza.
Now let’s talk about class X poem
example – Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
Check the last words of each line – fire, ice, desire.
fire and desire are rhyming to reach other but ice not.
so, here the Rhyme Scheme – ‘aba’
I hope rhyme scheme is clear to you guys. In the next topic , we will discuss about poetic device.
