Late Shri Kundan Lal Ji, the founder of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Ludhiana, was a great visionary and a self made man with a passion for education. Born in a humble family of modest means, he bore the financial burden of putting himself through school and college. With single minded dedication and through sheer hard work, he excelled at all levels of his academic career, which culminated in his selection to the prestigious Indian Civil Services (ICS) cadre of British India.

The freedom movement drew the zealous patriot in him towards the All India Congress Party and he voluntarily gave up his coveted position as an ICS officer, to devote his time, effort and energy to the independence of his country. Simultaneously, he started his own business which grew into a prosperous venture. His enthusiasm for education continued to be a driving force. In a culture where society drew the line on providing higher education to the girl child, he became a beacon of change. His desire to provide his daughters with quality education led him to start a school-cum-college in the ground floor of his own home, in the absence of a college for women in Ludhiana. The endeavor was greatly appreciated and soon the premises had to be shifted to a larger accommodation to cater to the swelling number of students.

Shri Kundan Lal Ji’s dream had taken roots! In 1949, he made a charitable Trust of the bulk of his property, including the house where the school had begun. The Trust aimed to work for the purpose of imparting education, setting up more schools and libraries in villages and cities across the state. In 1956, Kundan Vidya Mandir, the flagship school of the Trust was built on the site of his residence in Ludhiana. It holds the distinction of being the first school in Punjab to be affiliated to CBSE in 1963 Today, it is a name synonymous with consistent excellence and quality in education, living by the high ideals of its venerated founder, Shri Kundan Lal Ji. Over the past seven decades, its alumni have stepped out from its portals and left their unique and indelible mark of steadfast moral values, integrity and honesty in the world. In Chandigarh, Kundan International School, was set up in 2007 under the aegis of Shri Kundan Lal Trust and is committed to emulating Shri Kundan Lal Ji’s untiring perseverance and commitment to a superior level of education for all its young proteges.
